Types of motorcycle locks

Disc locks – This is the most commonly used lock. It is ideal for motorcycles without internal voids (such as most Honda motorcycles) that can hold other types of locks.

It has a long cable that threads around and through the disc. The lock is then secured in place beyond the disc. It essentially a lock that locks within itself.

Cable lock – This is an excellently versatile type of motorcycle lock. You may buy only the cable, a cable with an attached lock or a cable lock with a key or combination lock.

The cables are lightweight and coated with scratch-resistant materials. It is tough- very difficult to cut or saw through. This can be used on any part of the motorcycle, on any type of motorcycle.

Chain locks – This type of motorcycle lock  provides a higher level of security to any motorcycle type. These chains are extremely heavy and nearly impossible to cut through.

U-lock – This type is lighter than chain locks but are more secure. This is almost impenetrable. You can use this to secure your motorcycle to any stationary object.

Advantages of using different types of motorcycle locks

The main job of a motorcycle lock is to reduce chances of getting the motorcycle stolen. No matter where you park it, thieves can still get to it.

Lock to another motorcycle – When travelling in groups, you may opt to link your motorcycles together, locking them to each other. This will make it more difficult to cart away.

Lock through the frame not the front wheel – Most motorcycle have front wheels that are easy to dismantle. Place your lock through the motorcycle frame instead.

Lock through the rear wheel – This is an alternative spot to secure your motorcycle lock. The rear wheel is more difficult to dismount than the front wheel.

Lock in different spots every night – Constantly park and lock your motorcycle in different areas. This will deter thieves who are studying your habits and looking for opportunities to steal.

Cover – Keeping your motorcycle out of sight is one way to deter thieves. Some experts recommend using bicycle covers to hide your top-of-the-line sports cruiser.
